Storing and Utilizing – The Final Steps in Learning

Once we have determined that the brain is receiving quality sensory input and have begun to increase auditory and visual processing skills, we decide if the information is “worthy” of keeping in long-term memory. Sadly, we cannot remember all the information that we want to remember. Why is this? We are designed to have a one-side dominance, which allows us to function most efficiently. Many are functioning with a mixed dominance. With a mixed dominance information goes to different parts of the brain. When information enters on the right side it goes to one part of the brain and when it enters on the left side it goes to another part of the brain. Then when we want to retrieve that information we have to look for it, going back and forth from one side of the brain to the other. This can be very slow and frustrating to a learner of any age. Depending on what it is, we may give up before we finish a task.

Functional Indicators of a Mixed Dominance:

  • Remember one day, and not the other
  • Constantly losing things
  • Reversals (transpositions, omissions, inversions)
  • Right/left confusion
  • “Mirror writing”
  • Diagnosis of Dyslexia
  • Disorganized
  • Difficulty remembering letters, numbers or sight words
  • Stuttering or stammering
  • No sense of time
  • Overreact to situations
  • Emotional melt downs – especially related to learning

In addition to these functional indicators, we can observe which eye, ear, hand and foot an individual uses:

  • Using one-eye objects like a kaleidoscope, a microscope, telescope, or a paper towel roll
  • Pointing or sighting through a “window” made with hands for far point vision
  • Using one-ear objects like a phone, watch, etc.
  • Hopping, kicking, running, etc.
  • Writing, drawing, eating, brushing teeth, combing hair, throwing etc.

Ideally, we should observe all of these activities in natural settings over a period of time. That will give us an idea of where to concentrate efforts. Foundational to establishing a one-side dominance we can do a great amount of cross patterning activities that are a part of gross motor development: army crawl, cross creep, walking, running, cross march, cross skip and more. Even an adult will benefit from going back and doing many of these activities. This is the first step in development and the first step in establishing a one-side dominance.

Finally, once the brain is receiving quality sensory input, strong auditory and visual processing, and is storing the information efficiently, utilizing this information in learning comes much easier.

Proper Training Is Necessary For A Career In Childcare

If you love children and would enjoy a career in childcare, you may be considering a daycare degree or program. An Early Childhood Education degree is a possibility if you want to teach in a preschool or kindergarten, but for those who would simply prefer to be daycare workers, an Associate’s degree or certificate in daycare or childcare may be all you need. Take some time to explore the ins and outs of your various career options to determine what educational program is right for you.

An Early Childhood Education degree is a four-year degree that qualifies candidates to be teachers in a public or private preschool or kindergarten. This program is typically more time-consuming and involved than a daycare degree, though the differences between a preschool and a daycare can be unclear. In general, though a high quality daycare program may include educational programming, a daycare is focused more on providing childcare for working parents, while a preschool prepares students for kindergarten.

As a worker in this field, you will be responsible for providing care for young children in a safe and healthy environment. You will keep order among your charges, help them to engage in fun activities, and incorporate educational activities into their days. You can seek employment at an established daycare or even start your own. Employment prospects in this capacity are excellent and should continue to grow.

To be a successful worker, you must be physically fit, energetic, and able to spend long days interacting with children who may be very active and hard to handle. You should be positive, upbeat, and fun to be around. You must also be a fair but firm disciplinarian in order to maintain the good behavior and physical safety of the children in your care.

While it is possible to get a daycare job without formal training or education, you will be better qualified for your career and receive better job opportunities, as well as room for advancement, if you earn a certificate or degree. These programs are often available at your local community college. An Associate’s degree can be completed in around two years, while a certificate takes less time. You can even earn a degree online!

Your program will educate you on important aspects of child development, infant care, health, and nutrition. You’ll take classes on planning lessons and activities for young children. You’ll even learn to recognize problems such as child abuse or a poor parent-child relationship. Your program should offer cover skills such as CPR, first aid, and how to react in an emergency. It is important to have this knowledge and information to provide exemplary care to the children entrusted to you.

Depending on your state, there may be specific licensure requirements to work in with children. Smaller facilities often are not regulated, but if you seek employment at a larger center, which often is a better paying job, you may have to seek certification in this field. At a minimum, childcare workers are subject to background checks and regular immunizations.

Teaching Foreign Languages In The US Compared With Europe

Many would contend that in the United States our students in school are lacking when it comes to learning languages. In fact, I’ve seen reports coming out of the European Union that shows the United States very low when it comes to language in our schools. However, I believe this is like comparing apples and oranges, and let me tell you why.

In Europe kids often learn many languages before their tenth birthday, does this mean that in the US we are severely lacking, as most kids only speak one language, and only 25% are bi-lingual. Well, I hate to be compared with the EU seeing as it is falling apart right now.

Further, when learning a language, immersion is very important, but the kids in the United States generally live in neighborhoods and communities that only speak one language, or perhaps two, and therefore they just don’t have the same opportunity to learn multiple languages, like all the languages being used in Europe.

Additionally, I would say that English is the business language of the world, and as long as the United States continues to be a great nation, people around the world will have to learn English if they want to do business in the world, and use computers. Now if we allow the socialists, to run our country and drive it into oblivion, then perhaps we should all start learning Chinese.

In that case all of those countries in Europe there learning foreign languages, are learning languages of that region, not Chinese, so they aren’t any better off than we are in the future. I don’t feel so embarrassed at all with the learning of languages in our schools, I feel that English, although it isn’t the easiest language to learn due to all the influences from all of the other languages, is a good language, and it’s worked out just fine for us.

Further, if those in Europe want to attempt to make themselves look better by claiming that the US students are deficient in language, I would say to them that someday maybe all those countries in Europe might all choose just one language, so they can keep their European Union together without falling apart. You see, I don’t take too kindly to people in other nations criticizing the US school system to make themselves look better.

Face it, the English language much like the US dollar is used worldwide. Maybe other nations ought to be working very hard to learn English, rather than telling us that we are lacking for not learning their languages. The English language has won, it’s the language that needs to be learned, and our students in the United States are doing that. So please make a note of it.

Well-Known Virginia Universities and Colleges

Virginia is home to numerous colleges and universities, with many of them being nationally recognized for both their scholastic and athletic achievements. That being said, here are some of the Commonwealth’s institutes of higher learning that may be known on a national level:

The University of Virginia
Located in Charlottesville and founded by Thomas Jefferson, UVA is regularly ranked one of the top academic institutions for both undergraduate and post graduate study. With a well-respected law school, undergraduate business school, post graduate writing program, and medical school it’s been home to those seeking academic and athletic excellence.

Notable alumni include: Edgar Allen Poe, Walter Reed, Katie Couric, Tiki and Ronde Barber, and James Farrior.

Virginia Tech
Formally known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, VTech, as it’s popularly known, is located in Blacksburg, having been founded in 1872. Featuring a well-ranked undergraduate engineering department, as well as a well-ranked undergraduate business school. In addition, six of VTech’s engineering specialities rank in the top 20 nationally.

Also known for athletics, VTech is an annual competitor in the ACC in football and recently saw a resurgence in their men’s basketball program. Their women’s basketball team is perennially represented in the post-season.

Notable alumni include: Hoda Kotb, Jayma Mays, Bruce Smith, Michael Vick, DeAngelo Hall, Josh Morgan, and Eddie Royal.

George Mason University
Located just outside DC in Fairfax, GMU is the largest university by headcount in the Commonwealth, with over 32,500 students enrolled, with approximately 5,500 actually living on campus. While GMU also has campuses in Prince William County and Arlington, only the Fairfax campus offers student housing.

Named for founding father George Mason, GMU was originally a branch of UVA. Established in 1957, it was separated from UVA in 1972 to become its own university. While one of the younger universities in Virginia, it has nonetheless gained acclaim for its economics department, which features two Nobel Prize winners on staff, and burst onto the national scene in 2006 when the men’s basketball team made it all the way to the Final Four before losing to eventual champion Florida.

Virginia Commonwealth University
Located in Richmond, VCU wasn’t officially created until 1968 when Richmond Professional Institute and Medical College of Virginia merged. Well-known for both the MCV medical school and their extensive arts programs, VCU is also a popular school thanks to its location in the heart of Richmond.

Much like GMU before it, VCU jumped into the national awareness with a 2011 Final Four appearance by their men’s basketball team, which eventually lost to Butler.

Notable alumni include: Path Adams, David Baldacci, members of the band GWAR, Debbie Matenopoulos, and Brandon Inge.

Virginia Military Institute
Established in 1839 and located in Lexington, VMI is the oldest state-supported military college in the country. While often referred to as the “West Point of the South”, cadets at VMI are not compelled into military service upon their graduation like at the other service academies, though during their time at the school they are required to engage in ROTC training.

With a history that predates the American Civil War, faculty have included Stonewall Jackson, and the school was pivotal for the South during the Civil War as it played a large part in training soldiers for battle, and a corp of cadets fought as an independent unit, a distinction it holds from the other service academies.

The College of William & Mary
Located in Williamsburg, William & Mary was founded in 1693 by royal charter from King William III and Queen Mary II. The only older school of higher education in the US is Harvard, though William & Mary is home to the first collegiate secret society, the F.H.C. Society.

Featuring the lowest student to faculty ration (12 to 1) and with 99% of all undergraduate classes (except for labs) taught by professors instead of teaching assistants, William & Mary is regularly listed as one of the top undergraduate teaching programs.

Available Training In Fashion Design

For any budding fashion designer, the key is to gain the best fashion design training. This can be done at many colleges and universities. A good place to start fashion design education would be a diploma in college. This is an ideal way for fashion enthusiasts to ease themselves into training in fashion design.

Some of the topics covered will include looking at different types of materials and patterns, colours and the basics of designing. Students will learn how to match colours, what styles work with what materials and how to customize and accessorize outfits. They will not only learn about clothes but they will learn about shoes and accessories also.

The next step to take if deciding to continue on with training in fashion design would be a degree. Students should choose a good university with good fashion design training programs. They may also wish to consider location and if they offer the opportunity for work placements. A more prestigious University would always be the top of any enthusiasts list, this however may not be possible for everyone maybe for financial reasons or other commitments. What is key is that the chosen University has a program which suits them.

Students taking fashion design education at university level will learn similar topics to those at college level but the topics will be much more in depth, there will be more assignments and more exams. Studying at university is hard work and deadlines will need to be met but this is all good experience for working in the fashion industry.

Universities which offer work placements are very popular when students are looking for fashion design training programs. This can often give students the chance to get a foot in the door with a fashion agency. Once there the employer or sponsor may feel the individual has potential within their company and offer them a permanent position.

For those who take on degree’s without placements, gaining employment in this industry can be hard work and many have to start off at the bottom and work their way up. They may start off helping behind the scenes but this will still give them good experience and their fashion education will of course come to use. There are many different areas to work within in this industry and it maybe that design is not the initial area and is instead something to work towards.

There are also online fashion design education programs, however they do not give the hands on experience which studying with an institution can. They are more suited to those who already work within the industry and are wishing to progress further. Giving them more earning potential and the ability to apply for design jobs within their sector.

During their study specialist areas may be chosen, these for example could be women’s wear, children’s wear, men’s wear or couture design. Fashion design training can give students the opportunity to gain experience within these areas giving them more chance to be able to apply for a job which suits them and their interests.

Practice Teacher’s Experiences and Thoughts

LS and TS Compatibility

We were given the golden opportunity to handle three different sections during our individual practice teaching. With this opportunity, I was able to gain a very valuable lesson.

It came to me that there are certain strategies and activities that are effective for a certain group of learners only. I may have given the same activity to all three sections but I saw that it was best effective in my 1:00 to 2:00 class. In the other classes, however, it may have been effective to some, but to some, it may not have been that effective. Although I tried my best to adjust my instructions depending on the ability, observed preference, learning strategies and learning styles of my students.

With this experience, I was able to prove to myself that teaching is indeed what I am cut for. It was exhausting, yes, but it was at the same time rewarding. I enjoyed every minute, including all the hassles such as making the instructional materials and worrying whether my students are learning or not.

Negotiation

The students celebrated their “Buwan ng Wika”. Classes were suspended in the morning and resumed in the afternoon.

When we went into the class we were supposed to handle, the students were obviously not in the mood to have a class. They were asking us if they could have the afternoon off. We insisted that we still continue with the class since it was only for 50 minutes. We were already having our class but it’s obvious that the students were restless. They were not cooperative.

My group mate was the one teaching at that time. She bargained with the students. She told them that if they will cooperate, she will make the lesson shorter and they could be dismissed earlier. They agreed to the bargain and settled down. She continued with the lesson, giving several activities where the learners would move around. Somehow, what she did took its roots in me.

From the experience, I learned that I should be sensitive and observant enough to be able to gauge my students’ mood for the day. If I see that they are antsy and would rather play than be in the room and listen to my lecture, then I should be creative enough to come up with something to gain their attention. The way I see it, the strategy that my group mate used is something I could borrow and employ someday.
